We were unable to get repro- ducible results either a) because the superlattice detached from the substrate under x-irradiation or b) because of energy drifts in the monochrometer. We will grow new superlattices using a Cr buffer on MgO and cool the sample during the measurement, both modifications will reduce the decomposition of the hydrolyzed MgO surface. We will also produce new superlattices grown on SrTiO_3, which should be more stable. The goal is to detect the actual induced order in Ir that causes strong antiferromagnetic coupling of successive Co layers. Such effects are important in GMR-based magnetic recording heads. equipment+required: Displex if MgO substrates are to be used. experiment: Spacer-layer magnetization in magnetic superlattices. hazards: No known hazards name: Myron B.
