Woicik) and UIUC-MRL (A. Frenkel) primarily to test the performance of the oprics for EXAFS experiments. However, we also intend to collect meaningful data on a number of systems, particularly suited for study on the ID line, where the data from NSLS is marginal. The testting part of the work will be performed over a wide energy range (8-25 keV), using the monochromator in both fixed exit and non-fixed exit mode, using both focussed and non-focussed beam. For this phase of the study we will be using well-defined systems e.g. metal foils, and samples where data has been collected at other facilities. The other work will involve: (a) EXAFS studies at Cu K-edge of Cu complexes with organic ligands in solution at low (<0.0005 M) concentration. (b) EXAFS studies at Ni K-edge of Ni in hydrocarbon feeds, where the Ni concentration is <100 ppm. (c) EXAFS studies at Pt L3-edge of supported Pt catalysts where the Pt loading is 0.04 wt %. We feel these studies will be an excellent test of the capabilities of the ID line for EXAFS work. equipment+required: Ion chambers and associated electronics experiment: EXAFS studies of dilute systems hazards: We do not forsee any hazards associated with the experiment. All the materials have low reactivity, and are stable at room temperature. name: Simon R.
