Very different microstructural morphologies are encountered ranging from coarse concentrated pore systems, nanostructured materials, solid suspensions ranging from ultra-dilute to gel agglomerates, fractal systems, polymer structures, precipitate populations, to trace-level defect structure volume-fractions. We believe that the time has come to use the new USAXS facility to explore a cross-section of these material classes. The aim will be to identify, and start to pursue, the most tractable new science that can emerge from the instrument (in its initial configuration) over the next year or so. The systems studied will be: Si3N4 containing Lu2Si2O7 inclusions, MgAl2O4 spinels containing nanovoids, nano-ZrO2 agglomerates in suspension, hydrating cement, SiO2 agglomerates in suspension, fractal aerogels and xerogels, and a range of complex polymer systems listed on the safety form. equipment+required: USAXS configuration with channel cut crystal on mr stage. Heater for some of the polymer samples. experiment: Feasibility USAXS Study of Different Clases of Materials hazards: Some of the nano-zirconia suspensions have pH less than 4.0. These samples will be transported in sealed containers. Eye goggles and gloves will be used in handling these in the chemistry lab. etc. name: G.G. Long and A.J.
