Specifically we plan to use an area detector to collect powder diffraction patterns of unknown oxides (even mixtures of oxides), with data of sufficient quality to use for phase identification, and in as short a time period as possible. We will also explore the possibility of simultaneously collecting XRF information to determine chemical composition in at least a semi-quantitative manner. The third part of the experiment will involve collecting XANES data on those elements of interest, with the aim of determining oxidation state information. The collaborators in the experiment will be Simon Bare, Bob Broach and Rich Willis from UOP, and Gene Ice and Ki-Sup Chung from ORNL. equipment+required: XYZ stage and Huber diffractometer Ion chambers, Huber slits, etc. ORNL will be supplying area detector and solid state fluorescence detector. experiment: Combined XRD, XRF %26 XANES studies of novel oxides hazards: There are no specific hazards associated with this experiment. The samples are non-hazardous metals or metal oxides, and the data will be recorded at room temperature in air. name: Simon R.
