Introducing carbon onto the surface of the silica makes the powders more compatible with rubber compounds and easier to disperse compared to conventional fumed silica. Therefore these powders are being investigated to see how they improve rubber reinforcement and how the carbon content, particle size, and fractal structure of the powders influence reinforcement. Initial microscopy showed that the particles are highly aggregated and that the surface of the particles is rough. The goal of this research is to confirm whether or not the surface of these powders are rough and to measure the surface fractal dimension. Additionally, the particle diameter, aggregate size, and mass fractal dimension can be obtained from these USAXS experiments. This information can be used to explain the reinforcement mechanisms of the powders on filled elastomer compounds verses conventional fillers. equipment+required: USAXS camera experiment: Carbon coated silica for elastomer reinforcement foreign+nationals: George Skillas, Greek National, Post Doc.
