It has recently been found that the addition of 2nd phase rare earth oxynitrides reduce creep in silicon nitride, and in some cases eliminate creep entirely. These anomalous USAXS experiments are aimed at measuring the porous phase (creep cavities) and the secondary phase (rare earth oxynitrides) independently, as a function of deformation. Previous results of similar measurements on UNICAT Sector 33 suggest that the Luecke-Wiederhorn theory of ceramic creep may have to be adjusted to understand those data. equipment+required: USAXS instrument.
