The goal is to develop a relationship between the silica structure (fractal dimension, particle size, aggregate size, and agglomerate size) and the observed reinforcement effects when added to elastomers. The structure of the silica will be determined by USAXS and SAXS while the reinforcement properties will be determined using dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile testing. This work is an extension of similar previous studies using carbon coated silica that resulted in a correlation between the silica structure and dynamic mechanical data. The study will include measurements of the raw silica powders and of the filled natural rubber samples. equipment+required: USAXS experiment: Investigation of structure and reinforcement properties of layered and precipitated silicates foreign+nationals: hazards: None. minimumdays: 2 name: Doug Kohls new+request: on nonmembers: Gert Heinrich, Continental AG Hannover Germany (will not participate in experiments) Greg Beaucage, University of Cincinnati station: 33ID-D unacceptable+dates: #REMOTE_HOST: ns.conti.de #REMOTE_ADDR: 193.98.108.129 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 1279 #HTTP_REFERER: http://www.uni.aps.anl.gov/unireq.htm #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.5 [en] (WinNT; I)
