The sample will be cleaned in UHV by moderate sputtering and then successively annealed to 350, 400 and 450 centigrades. The diffuse scattering in a plane parallel to the sample surface will be recorded with linescans using a scintillation counter after each annealing step. It is expected that precursors of the phase transition will show up as diffuse scattering indicative of the transformation mechanism. The transformation path from the fcc to the hcp state is expected to differ from that in bulk Cobalt due to an epitaxial clamping effect. The results should be generally valid for the class of thin films exhibiting martensitic transitions. equipment+required: UHV chamber in Station E, sputter gun, heater experiment: Structural Transitions in Epitaxial Co layers foreign+nationals: Dr. Wolfgang Donner, University of Houston. (german citizen) has valid batch No. B 088183 A hazards: Sample is 50 nm Co layer on 10 nm Cu on a 5x5mm^2 SrTiO3 crystal. The sample is harmless and no hazarduous materials will be used. minimumdays: 4 name: S.C.
