Fluctuations of hydrophobic interfaces. Alkyl silane coated Si wafers have flat hydrophobic surfaces. We plan to sudy the reflectivity signal from these, examining the intensity fluctuations at off- specular positions with a coherent pink beam. Interfaces with water-glycerol mixtures will be examined as a function of temperature down to -30C near to the glass transition where diffusion stops. Crystallization of ferritin. Ferritin solutions of 10mg/ml will be mixed with salt precipitants in 1mm x-ray capillaries. Small crystals are formed within a few hours. We will monitor these by diffraction of a small pink beam to look for the shape of the 111 Bragg peak. It is hoped to learn about the shape of the crystals in this way. We estimate there will still be enough coherence from the undulator spectrum without the need for the monochromator. Crystallinity of thin polymer films on Si. Dielectric films of PMMA will be prepared with different states of annealing. These will be studied by small-angle scattering to determine their degree of crystallinity.
