Previous experiments suggest that electron-beam physical-vapor deposited (EB-PVD) coatings must be studied in 2 or 3 orthogonal sample orientations since they do not possess the axial symmetry of thermal-spray (TS) deposits. Apart from obtaining a more complete characterization of as-deposited and thermally-cycled EB-PVD coatings along these lines, we wish to investigate high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) deposits for the first time. This would allow a quantitative microstructure comparison of 3 very different generic TBC microstructures: TS, EB-PVD and HVOF. equipment+required: USAXS with side-reflection stages (i.e., SBUSAXS) and x-ray energy of 17 keV for penetration of YSZ deposits. NOTE: Experiment needs continuous fill, i.e, constant beam current conditions. experiment: SBUSAXS of Advanced HVOF, Thermal-Spray and EB-PVD Coatings on Substrates foreign+nationals: Andrew Allen (UK), Jan Ilavsky (Czech Rep.), Anand Kulkarni (India) All previous users. hazards: NONE minimumdays: 6 name: Andrew Allen nonmembers: Andrew Allen (NIST), Jan Ilavsky (NIST), Anand Kulkarni (SUNY), Tabbetha Dobbins (NIST) All previous users at time of experiment. unacceptable+dates: February 17 - March 13 (Jan unavailable).
