The assumptions about the system, Pb evaporation at RT onto a Si wafer followed by warming to just below T_M, all turned out to be correct and we were able to prepare nice crystals in the 1 micron range. Unfortunately the UHV system on 33-ID-E was not working and we had to do the experiment in bad pressure. We got coherent diffraction patterns, but they disappeared upon heating, perhaps because of the vacuum. The UHV is now rectified, so we hope for better results next time around. The ultimate goal is to observe the interplay between surface tension and surface melting, by observing the shape of the still-crystalline part of the particles near to T_M. equipment+required: UHV diffractometer at 33-ID-E experiment: Surface melting of Lead Nanocrystals III foreign+nationals: none hazards: minimumdays: 4 name: Ian Robinson nonmembers: none unacceptable+dates: June 26 to July 6 July 15 to 19 Aug 3 to 9 #REMOTE_HOST: 12-221-74-198.client.insightbb.com #REMOTE_ADDR: 12.221.74.198 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 1105 #HTTP_REFERER: http://www.uni.aps.anl.gov/unireq.htm #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
