The primary objective will be to measure the scattering curves at two or three orthogonal directions in physical vapor deposited (EBPVD) and directed vapor deposited (DVD) coatings. Those coatings are not predicted to exhibit the same anisotropy in all directions. The lowest symmetry is found in the microstructures of EBPVD coatings deposited with an inclined (40 degree) substrate, and so we will measure an additional three sectional orientations around 45 degrees of the original set. The scattering data collected in several orthogonal directions will push the limits of our developing anisotropic USAXS analysis scheme (still under development). Small angle scattering has detected the presence of fine (10-100nm) intracolumnar voids in EBPVD coatings. In the most recent USAXS experiment, it was found that fine intracolumnar pores thought to assist in lowering thermal conductivity only appear in some DVD coatings (processed at high chamber pressures). We wish to explore this phenomenon further by measuring coatings processed under a range of pressure conditions.
