It has been suggested that quantum size effects (QSE) govern the energetics that lead to the "magic" thicknesses observed. If this is true, structural relaxations of the island layers would be present. Indeed, the STM studies referred to previously claim to have seen such relaxations. However, CTR analysis with x-rays is much better suited to probing the structure within the film than STM. I propose using the surface diffraction chamber in 33ID-E to analyze the specular CTR both during and after deposition to determine the structural properties of the Pb/Si(111) system. NOTE: Due to the time needed to change samples, two runs of 2-3 days each would be ideal.
