Two sets of experiments will be performed. In the first experiment, the stability of L12 ordered precipitates within a fcc solid solution phase on heating to its dissolution temperature will be investigated and also precipitation of the gamma' precipitates from the supersaturated gamma phase during cooling will be studied. This experiment will be performed with dynamic helium shielding to minimize oxidation. The results from these experiments will be compared with computational thermodynamic and kinetic calculations. In the second experiment, the oxidation kinetics under similar heating and cooling conditions will be studied. The type of oxides that form at different temperatures under air will be evaluated. These measurements will be correlated with the phase evolution that was performed under dynamic gas shielding. The results will be crucial to evaluate the complex relationship between solid-state transformation and oxidation kinetics. Currently, three alloys are being considered for the studies. The compositions are given below: 18500: Ni-8Al-7.7Cr-1.5Mo-1.7Zr-0.008B (wt.%) 18501: Ni-12Al-4Cr-1.5Mo-0.8Zr-0.008B (wt.%) 18502: Ni-12.8Al-0.008 (Ni3Al) (wt.%) equipment+required: spot welder CCD camera Newport diffractrometer experiment: Phase Transformation and Oxidation Experiments on Nickel Base Superalloys foreign+nationals: Sudarsanam Babu (he has begun the use registration process) hazards: Hot samples are a fire and burn hazard. minimumdays: 2 name: Eliot Specht nonmembers: unacceptable+dates: Feb. 16-March 21 April 7-11 If scheduling permits, it would be convenient for me to consolidate this with my "stress in protective oxides" request. #REMOTE_HOST: spechted.ornl.gov #REMOTE_ADDR: 160.91.156.139 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 2174 #HTTP_REFERER: http://www.uni.aps.anl.gov/unireq.htm #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.77 [en] (Windows NT 5.0; U)
