The Pb/Si(111) system exhibits such effects (often referred to as Quantum Size Effects, or QSE) and has been recently studied with a variety of techniques including STM and SPA-LEED. However, the exact nature of the effects of QSE on the system are still somewhat debatable. We propose using surface x-ray diffraction as a complementary technique to what has been used so far. In the proposed experiment, the structure and growth behavior of the system would be studied using the surface diffraction chamber in 33ID-E. Please break up the time into two runs of 2-3 days each to allow for sample change.
