The purpose of the proposed experiments is to understand the consequences of restricted geometry (thin Nb films on a non-absorbing substrate) on the hydrogen-Nb miscibility gap. XRD allows us to determine the correlation between the phase transformations within the miscibility gap and the loss of film coherency via dislocation generation. We indirectly observe dislocation formation by an increase in film mosaic and the reduction of the "narrow" component of the rocking curve associated with perfect film registry of the film to the substrate. equipment+required: Turbo station (two turbo stations if possible) experiment: High resolution XRD measurements of hydride phase transformations in epitaxial Nb foreign+nationals: hazards: We are using hydrogen gas in a static, non-flowing configuration.
