This is in line with our on-going research efforts in identifying potential materials with new, energy absorbing mechanisms, which applications in the design of tough, high temperature composite ceramics, (operating at temps of 1600 degrees C), large force actuation in smart materials and shape memory behavior in ceramics. This method will also rapidly generate data on lattice parameters and thermal expansion coefficients up to the melting point of an oxide ceramic, transformation temperatures, identfy new, unreported high temperature phases which can then be further studied by the complementay technique of neutron diffraction. Such data is necessary for the systematic and well-informed,design and engineering of ceramic matrix composites. equipment+required: Huber four circle diffractometer, water chiller, precision sensitive detector experiment: In situ, High temperature, Ferroelastic Transformations in Tantalates foreign+nationals: Dr. Kersten Jurkschat (German citizen) Dr. Pankaj Sarin (Indian citizen) Prof. Waltraud Kriven (Australian citizen) hazards: There appear to be no extra hazards as compared to the normal acquisition of polycrystalline powder diffractometry plots by synchrotron data. Common sense procedures apply, e.g., not to touch the furnace when it is heating the specimen, and to look at the intense light only with double sheets of pyrometry glass which are provided. Care should be taken to ensure that the water chiller is always operating when the furnace is operating. minimumdays: 3 name: Waltraud M.
