YSZ thermal barrier coatings, presently used in prime reliant applications, suffer phase de-stabilization and sintering temperatures above 1400 C. As turbine engines are operated at higher temperatures in order to improve engine efficiency, new coating materials will become increasingly important. The proposed experiments will study La2Zr2O7 and other rare earth zirconates deposited by EB-PVD, EB-DVD and plasma spray both before and after heat treatment in order to examine the sintering resistance of those coatings. Additionally, studies of the latest YSZ microstructures, such as heat-treated dense vertically cracked coatings, will be performed in continuation of work begun on YSZ in a previous cycle. Solid oxide fuel cell materials, comprised of an 80 um La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 cathode, 5-10 um YSZ electrolyte, and 3um Ni(YSZ) Cermet anode layers will also be examined.
