We installed new crystal optics for the analyzer pair; we made use of the Apogee camera and lenses; and we used a new focusing motion for the scintillator crystal. USAXS imaging studies of human cartilage and artificial tissue scaffolds were begun. Our best resolution remains around 0.5 micrometers. We also tested our stage for 3D tomographic imaging using USAXS as the contrast mechanism, and that appears to work satisfactorily. Unfortunately, right at the beginning of this beam period, the piezo that controls the 2nd crystal in the beam line monochromator failed. We ran as best we could, and made the observations listed above. Whereas we obtained excellent selected-area USAXS scans from the tissues, we suffered an additional problem in that the images were not stored correctly in the computer. This problem is currently being addressed and will be fixed before the next beam period. In the next beam period, we plan to repeat the incomplete measurements we made in June. Besides the human cartilage and the tissue scaffolds (we will have specimens with and without osteoblasts), we plan measurements on the following samples: PMMA-carbon black (0.8%), quantum dots, SiC whiskers in a ceramic matrix composite, and possibly hen egg-white lysozyme crystals. equipment_required: no additional experiment: USAXS imaging of human and artificial tissues foreign_nationals: hazards: none minimumdays: 8 name: Gabrielle Long new_request: ON nonmembers: Lyle Levine (NIST) Carol Muehleman (Rush Medical College) unacceptable_dates: Best dates for us are Oct. 29 - Nov. 6.
