A crucial parameter to establish the relationship of the load partitioning and fracture toughness is the stress of the two phases. Measurements of strain at the crack tip of Ni3Al-TiC have been made on the beamline ID34-E. The results indicate such measurements are feasible. We propose an experiment to measure the load partitioning of a series of simple composite system composed of two layers of single crystal ceramics sandwiched with a single crystal metal matrix. A crack will be cut along the cleavage plane of the ceramics reinforced phase and the load shared among the two phases as it propagates will be probed. The proposed composite systems include Al/Al2O3, Al/MgO, Cu/Si. Samples will be prepared by the intermetallics group at ORNL. equipment_required: experiment: Load partition across the crack region of composite foreign_nationals: Judy Pang hazards: minimumdays: 4 name: Judy Pang nonmembers: Joachim Schneibel unacceptable_dates: October and First week of November z34ID_change_undulator: yes z34ID_details: z34ID_on_axis: yes z34ID_parasitic: no z34ID_taper: yes #REMOTE_HOST: pangj2k.ornl.gov #REMOTE_ADDR: 160.91.156.95 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 1294 #HTTP_REFERER: http://www.uni.aps.anl.gov/unireq.htm #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT 5.0)
