The goal of the proposed research is to understand the early stages of decomposition in these alloys using in-situ X-ray diffraction. The samples in the amorphous condition will be subjected to isothermal heat treatment at 340°C and follow the stages of crystallization and their lattice parameter as a function of time. (2) Phase Separation and Austenite Decomposition in Super Bainite Steels: Preliminary investigation showed that there is a phase separation in austenite as it cools down from high temperature. We will repeat the same steps in simple Fe-0.8C alloy so that we can eliminate the effects of alloying elements and see whether phase separation occurs while holding at 300°C. (3) Metastable phases in sputtered films. Previous work showed a metastable phase (possible the alpha-Mn structure) in sputtered Fe-Cr-Ni films. We will examine ternary phase diagrams at a series of (ex situ) annealing temperatures to observe the phase equilibration. equipment_required: Spot welder, CCD x-ray camera, and telescopic level. Up to 10 cylinders of He. One experiment (high temperature) will run on the 33BM-C Huber at 24 keV (below Pd K edge), the other (combinatorial analysis) will run on the 33BM-B topography stages at 12 keV; we will need multiple stages for aligning and rastering the sample as before. experiment: Crystallization and decomposition foreign_nationals: Sudarsanam Suresh Babu (he is already cleared as an APS user). hazards: Hot samples. Alloys of Fe and Pd, and Fe-Cr-Ni thin films on Al2O3, are not otherwise hazardous (nontoxic, nonreactive, nonflammable). instrument: 33BM-C fourc instrument_other: minimumdays: 4 name: Eliot Specht nonmembers: unacceptable_dates: Jan. 29 to Feb 22. z34ID_details: #REMOTE_HOST: spechted.ornl.gov #REMOTE_ADDR: 160.91.156.139 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 1925 #HTTP_REFERER: http://www.uni.aps.anl.gov/unireq.htm #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0)
