Addition of 2nd phase rare earth oxynitrides reduces creep in silicon nitride, and in some cases eliminates creep entirely. These anomalous USAXS experiments are aimed at measuring the porous phase (creep cavities) and the secondary phase (rare earth oxynitrides) independently, as a function of deformation. Previous experiments at UNICAT provided useful information on the creep cavities although the information content was sketchy with respect to the secondary phases. Since the performance of the beam line and instrument have improved remarkably since those experiments in 2001, we propose to repeat those measurements so as to gather the information about the secondary phase population. The information obtained from the previous A-USAXS experiment was essential to the theoretical work of Luecke and Wiederhorn on these commercial silicon nitrides. Several journal articles resulted from that previous effort. equipment_required: experiment: A-USAXS study: commercial silicon nitride foreign_nationals: hazards: none instrument: 33ID-D USAXS instrument_other: minimumdays: 4 name: Pete Jemian nonmembers: Gabrielle Long - APS, Xiaodong Wu - Ga Tech unacceptable_dates: z34ID_details: #REMOTE_HOST: adsl-68-20-181-29.dsl.chcgil.ameritech.net #REMOTE_ADDR: 68.20.181.29 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 1396 #HTTP_REFERER: http://www.uni.aps.anl.gov/unireq.htm #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031007
