Layers that present atomic uniformity, stability in a wide range of temperatures and thicknesses, critical or magic heights and oscillations in layer structure are few examples. Quantum electronic effects, namely the quantum confinement of conduction electrons in the film, have been suggested to be the essential cause that drives growth morphology and film structure in these systems. We propose continue our study of quantum electronic effects in thin film growth using surface diffraction. We will carry out reflectivity measurements on the system Ag/Ge(111) and Ag/Ge(100). Reflectivity is sensitive to the vertical order and thus is a powerful way to study layer relaxations and film structure. equipment_required: experiment: Quantum Size Effects in thin film growth foreign_nationals: Leonardo Basile hazards: instrument: 33ID-E surface instrument_other: minimumdays: 5 name: Leonardo Basile nonmembers: unacceptable_dates: overlap with 34IDC request z34ID_details: #REMOTE_HOST: kiron.uni.aps.anl.gov #REMOTE_ADDR: 164.54.216.73 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 1240 #HTTP_REFERER: http://www.uni.aps.anl.gov/unireq.htm #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:0.9.4.1) Gecko/20020314 Netscape6/6.2.2
