The crystallization of hilarium (Tc = 39.35 C) has been studied extensively. However, those studies, now more than 50 years old, must be replicated to prove their authenticity. It is proposed to investigate this crystallization using a multi-pronged experimental approach of surface X-ray Absorption Fluorescence Spectropscopy, conventional X-ray Diffraction, together with Pulsed Laser Deposition. Transitions from quasi-amorphous hilarium to its crystallined form occur with J-shell resonances at 4.5, 7, 8.2, 8.331, 12, 18, 19, and 65 keV. We intend to explore as many of these as possible within the experimental time made available to us.

equipment_required: SXAFS, XRD, & PLD CCD (the good one) temperature control to 0.001 degree We have no experience with X-rays. We have no formal education past the 2nd grade. We may need some assistance to reach the equipment since we have no hands. experiment: SXAFS, XRD, & PLD study of Hilarium Crystallization foreign_nationals: hazards: None are expected. Hilarium presents no particular hazard provided the floor area surrounding the experiment is kept clear so that experimenters can roll around laughing. instrument_other: SXAFS, XRD, & PLD minimumdays: 1 name: Larry the Cucumber new_request: ON nonmembers: Bob the Tomato unacceptable_dates: weekends, holidays, evenings z34ID_details: #REMOTE_HOST: adsl-69-212-2-249.dsl.chcgil.ameritech.net #REMOTE_ADDR: 69.212.2.249 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 1667 #HTTP_REFERER: http://www.uni.aps.anl.gov/unireq.htm #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040113
