The proposed experiment is to study the difference in deformation zone size in edge cracked Al2024 alloys. Compact tension (CT) specimens subjected to fatigue test in humid environment and vacuum respectively will be studied. The samples will be first mapped by electron back scattering diffraction (EBSD). Locations on the crack corresponding to the stress intensity range will be marked to facilitate measurements. The fatigue tests were performed under constant maximum stress intensity, while the intensity range is continually decreased towards the end of the crack. Greater plastic damage is expected at the higher stress intensity range tested in wet air. The objective of this study is to detect any differences in the extent of plasticity surrounding the crack tip or crack wake of the two samples. The primary experimental parameter required is orientation change of individual measured volumes.
