This run we will commission an environmental chamber to study the metals in an inert-gas atmosphere. We will repeat key results to ensure that oxidation was not affecting our results. New work will include: A. In-situ study of nonequilibrium phase separation phenomenon in the austenite phase (FCC) in a Iron alloy. The origin and stability of phase separation will be studied by repeated thermal cycling. In addition, the effect of homogenization temperature and cooling rate on the evolution these structures will be characterized. This experiment will be repeated in alloys with different concentrations of carbon. B. The dynamics of liquid zinc film formation on copper alloys. It is speculated that under rapid heating and cooling conditions, the face centered cubic phase may trap the zinc without undergoing a phase change to other Cu-Zn compounds. We will vapor deposit a thin zinc layer on the surface and melt the film by resistive heating. The phase evolution will be studied in-situ using time - resolved X-ray diffraction technique. equipment_required: CCD camera, spot-welder. experiment: Phase transitions: real-time powder diffraction foreign_nationals: Suresh Babu (ORNL) hazards: Materials are iron, copper, and titanium alloys, which do not present chemical hazards. Heated samples will be enclosed in a metal can, so they will present a minimal fire and burn hazard. instrument: 33BM-C fourc instrument_other: minimumdays: 6 name: Eliot Specht nonmembers: John Elmer and Todd Palmer (LLNL) unacceptable_dates: May 25 - July 26. Because these are real-time experiments, we would prefer top-off mode. If necessary, we can run in non-topoff mode and work around fills. z34ID_details: #REMOTE_HOST: spechted.ornl.gov #REMOTE_ADDR: 160.91.156.139 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 1907 #HTTP_REFERER: http://www.uni.aps.anl.gov/unireq.htm #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0)
