This is equivalent to the XANES, but with the q-resolution to determine the spatial variation in the electronic structure. Our earlier attempts showed that the changes are small but observable. The real part of the anomalous scattering changed appreciably above and below q = 0.2, suggesting that the electronic structure appears to have inhomogeneity at the lengthscale five times the lattice constant, in agreement with the STM studies on BSCCO. Since YBCO-124 is stoichiometric, this implies intrinsic inhomogeneity. The issue of electronic inhomogeneity in superconducting cuprate is a major unresolved issue that directly pertains to the question of the nature of the pseudo-gap phase and the mechanism of superconductivity. equipment_required: Displex. experiment: Electronic inhomogeneity in cuprates foreign_nationals: Ferenc Stercel (U.
