We are interested in studying any structural changes of these particles upon deposition on different supports and after different treatments to remove ligands (e.g. thermal, UV-ozone). Also, we would like to perform ex situ EXAFS measurements of these supported-gold clusters after catalytic studies to examine structural changes coincident with changes in catalytic activity. The samples will be prepared at UIUC in a nitrogen glovebox in sealed, oxygen-free sample cells. This will allow us to simply mount the sample on the beam line for measurements. In future studies (not in this cycle) we would like to perform in situ catalytic studies. We are also looking at other metallic nanoparticle systems of catalytic interest. If time allows will will examine the effect of temperature and oxidation/reduction on supported platinum and ruthenium particles. These experiments will use non-flammable concentrations of hydrogen gas (3.4%). equipment_required: experiment: XAFS of Supported Metallic Nanoparticle Catalysts foreign_nationals: Joo Kang hazards: Supported gold nanoparticle samples will be sealed at UIUC. There will be no experiment specific hazards in the measurements of Au nanoparticles. If in situ experiments are performed on supported platinum or ruthenium particles then hazards include: compressed gases, cryogenic liquids, sample preparation (metal particles supported on carbon or metal oxide supports), heating elements. All safety precautions will be followed per protocols established in past runs. instrument: 33BM-B XAFS instrument_other: minimumdays: 4 name: Laurent Menard nonmembers: Anatoly Frenkel, Judith Yang unacceptable_dates: May 23 - June 10, July 27 - August 13 z34ID_details: #REMOTE_HOST: bayou-62.slip.uiuc.edu #REMOTE_ADDR: 130.126.24.195 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 1978 #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)
