Previous experiments on the plastic zone size in Al alloys in 3D suggest the microbeam technique is a good tool for fracture mechanics study. However the search for the crack positions beneath surface by the aperture method was very time-consuming. For the proposed experiments, the samples will be pre-cracked and the morphology of the crack will be mapped out by high energy X-ray tomography in ORNL.
