Due to high specific strength and hardness bulk metallic glasses are well suited for many applications, however lack of ductility has been limiting factor in use as a structural material. It has been found that small addition of Pd to ZrCuAl BMG system has pronounced effect on mechanical prop-erties. Only 3 atomic percent improves ductility significantly, however it was found that more than 9 at% of Pd induces brittleness again. The purpose of these studies is to ob-serve change in the atomic structures of the ternary ZrCuAl BMG due to partial substitu-tion by Pd atoms and correlate it with the mechanical properties. The atomic structure of metallic glass can be studied with x-ray scattering to ob-tain the total or compositionally resolved atomic pair-density functions (PDF). The PDF is obtained by the direct Fourier-transformation of the total scattering function. The PDF, ĉ0g(r), is given in Eq. 1 where g(r) is a pair distribution function, ĉ0 denotes atomic den-sity, and then scattering vector Q = 4Ĉsinć/Ć, where ć is the scattering angle and Ć de-notes wavelength. . (1) We will use resonant scattering at the Pd and Zr absorption edges to obtain differential pair correlation function. This type of experiment allows resolving compositional coordi-nation and changes in the Zr and Pd atomic environment. The research on the mechanical properties of BMG is sponsored through DOE and NSF grants. We intended in our first experiment in November to obtain Pd differential distri-bution functions, however due to Ge detector failure we carried measurement at the Zr edge. In this experiment we would like to complete task with Pd edge resonant scattering. We will need 3 days to perform the experiment. equipment_required: experiment: Resonant X-ray Scattering Study of the Atomic Structure of Bulk Metallic Glasses. foreign_nationals: hazards: None instrument: 33BM-C fourc instrument_other: minimumdays: 3 name: Takeshi Egami nonmembers: submit: Submit unacceptable_dates: z34ID_details: #REMOTE_HOST: adsl-68-125-79-48.dsl.pltn13.pacbell.net #REMOTE_ADDR: 68.125.79.48 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 2365 #HTTP_REFERER: http://www.uni.aps.anl.gov/admin/unireq.html #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
