One problem was the restriction of reciprocal space that resulted from the use of a single crystal thin film and our environmental cell. We will use instead a polycrystalline Pd foil. This will eliminate the restriction of reciprocal space. Hydride formation will be induced by controlled exposure to hydrogen gas, as before, in our environmental cell. We will monitor gas pressure reduction as a function of time to determine the hydrogen concentration. Hydride particles form as the Pd enters the miscibility gap. Past small-angle scattering work indicates the particles have a plate-like morphology. CXD measurements should be sensitive to this morphology and to the local lattice strains that develop and evolve with the formation and growth of the hydride particle. The goal of the experiment is to 1) observe a single embedded hydride particle with CXD and 2) to determine through quantitative analysis the strains associated with the hydride particle. equipment_required: Turbo pump station experiment: CXD measurements of hydride formation in polycrystalline Pd foreign_nationals: hazards: The experiments involve the use of hydrogen gas at pressures below approximately 200 Torr. We have a environmental gas cell with welded Be windows that we have used in the past. The experiments are identical to those performed in March of 2006.
