In our most recent attempt at this experiment we successfully recorded the CXD pattern from several individual hydride particles in a polycrystalline Pd foil during in situ hydrogen gas exposure. However, certain aspects of this sample (lack of an electropolished surface and the waviness of the foil) made it very difficult to align any of these individual hydride particles with the center of rotation of the diffractometer. We request beam time to investigate polycrystalline samples that have been electropolished. We will mount these samples to polished Si wafers with vacuum epoxy to ensure that samples are flat. We will repeat the in situ gas exposure procedures since these were successful during our last experimental run. equipment_required: Turbo pump station experiment: Coherent x-ray diffraction of embedded hydride particles in Pd foreign_nationals: Kun Mo hazards: We will perform in situ hydrogen gas exposure at room temperature with gas pressure less than 50 Torr in a volume less that 500 ml.
