Magnetoelectric materials have been proposed for use in a wide variety of applications, including the creation of devices for optical polarization, phase, and amplitude modulation, data storage, optical diodes, sensors, and actuators [1,2]. One approach to the creation of a magnetoelectric material is to make composites of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials. Large magnetoelectric interactions have been observed in ordered composites between CoFe2O4 and BaTiO3 [3]. These effects were attributed to a coupling between piezoelectricity and magnetostriction mediated by the strain between the two materials induced by epitaxy. In a layered structure of CoFe2O4 and BaTiO3 such effects were not observed [3]. The lack of a strong magnetoelectric interaction in this system was attributed to clamping by the substrate, which prevented the formation of a strain in the CoFe2O4 and BaTiO3 layers. It is possible to eliminate this problem by depositing ferromagnetic layers directly onto a ferroelectric substrate. In this case the entire substrate will induce a strain in the ferromagnetic material. We propose to examine the strain state of Fe3O4 thin films deposited on both BaTiO3 substrates and BaTiO3 thin films deposited on Nb:SrTiO3 substrates in the presence of electric fields applied in situ by using x-ray specular reflectivity and diffuse scattering. This will allow us to examine the effects of substrate clamping on these systems and to determine how strongly the strain state to the Fe3O4 layer is affected by that of the BaTiO3 layer. The observed changes in the strain state of the ferromagnetic layer can then be compared with changes observed in the magnetic properties in the presence of applied magnetic fields. equipment_required: experiment: Interfacial and long range structural response of Ferromagnetic films lattice matched to ferroelectric materials in applied fields. foreign_nationals: hazards: instrument: 33BM-C fourc instrument_other: minimumdays: 5 name: Karapetrova Evguenia nonmembers: Phil Ryan , George Sterbinsky, David Keavney submit: Submit unacceptable_dates: z34ID_details: #REMOTE_HOST: svo.uni.aps.anl.gov #REMOTE_ADDR: 164.54.216.35 #CONTENT_LENGTH: 2351 #HTTP_REFERER: http://www.uni.aps.anl.gov/admin/unireq.html #HTTP_USER_AGENT: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040910
