We will study spatially-resolved strain inhomogeneities in a true ferroelectric (BaTiO3) and in a relaxor ferroelectric material, Pb(MgNb)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PTO). Initial measurements will use depth-resolved 3D microdiffraction to measure the strain tensor near 90-degree domain boundaries in a BaTiO3 crystal with domain boundaries aligned in a single direction (grown by A. Bokov, Simon Fraser Univ). The spatial extent of residual strains near domain boundaries remains controversial. Subsequent microdiffraction measurements will investigate the temperature-dependent behavior of polarization domains in the relaxor ferroelectric PMN-PTO. Unlike a true ferroelectric, the ergodic phase of PMN-PTO is believed to possess mobile domains with two local order parameters, polarization strength and polarization orientation. When cooled, the domains become frozen in the nonergodic phase.
