Quartz (alpha-SiO2) single crystal is cut from the commercially available Herkimer “diamond” with the (100) or (101) surface exposed. The crystal is mounted in a flow cell. Deionized water (DIW) or solution can be flowed through the cell to expose the surface. A CCD detector will be used to measure the reflected beam intensity. The CTR measurement will be carried out at energy far away from the adsorption edge of the specific ion (e.g. Rb+). The resonance anomalous X-ray reflectivity (RAXR) will be carried out to probe the element specific distributions, especially the partitioning of the adsorbed ion between the inner-sphere and the outer-sphere electrical double layer. At least 4 Different solution conditions, such as the concentration and pH, are planned.
